Tortuguero Extension
March 5-8, 2023r,
For three days, you'll travel the canals and explore Costa Rica's northeasternmost National Park and the surrounding wet tropical forest. The only way to get here is by boat or plane, and an absence of roads lends to a very laid-back vibe. Translated to "Place of the Turtle," Tortuguero is so different from other ecosystems we visit it almost seems like a different country. This is the stronghold of the Great Green Macaw and is home to Rufuscent Tiger-heron, Sungrebe, Agami Heron, American Pygmy Kingfisher, and a host of water-loving birds.

June begins the green turtle nesting season, and if activity is high, we'll spend a night on the beach searching for a nesting turtle. White-faced capuchin, mantled howler monkey, and spider monkey are all common here, and as we glide noiselessly through the canal system, we'll keep our eyes out for these fascinating primates. The waters are also home to spectacle caiman. Basilisk lizards often appear and show why they are called "Jesus Christ lizards."

We'll stay in the only air-conditioned lodge in the area, close to Tortuguero National Park and the town of Tortuguero. You can watch the river traffic in the evenings as it motors in front of the lodge. The location also allows us to sample local fare at some of the outstanding restaurants. Those interested in taking home some memorabilia will find numerous nearby opportunities.
